Ask what outcome is being counted
Pregnancy rates and live-birth rates describe different outcomes. Rates reported per started cycle, egg collection, transfer procedure or embryo transferred also answer different questions. A percentage without a definition is not enough for a meaningful comparison.
Check the people and period represented
Ask which age group is included, whether own and donor eggs are separated, how many cycles are counted and when the data was collected. Small groups and incomplete follow-up can make comparisons uncertain.
Use statistics to inform a conversation
A clinic average is not your personal prediction. Ask how your history affects the discussion and how uncertainty will be explained. A reliable explanation should make room for unsuccessful treatment and choices about further attempts.
