Choosing neonatal care: questions to ask a hospital

Confirm the care actually available

Neonatal units provide different levels of support. Ask what the hospital is equipped and staffed to provide, and how a baby is transferred if more specialised care is needed. A label or photograph does not answer those questions.

Discuss communication and family access

Ask who updates parents, how questions are handled and what the visiting or participation arrangements are. Check whether feeding and expressing support is available and how it is organised.

Understand the financial arrangements

Request an explanation of likely charging categories, insurance procedures and what falls outside a maternity package. Costs may change with the level and length of care; a package name should not be treated as an all-inclusive neonatal estimate.

Use the answers in your birth planning

If a neonatal need has already been identified, discuss hospital selection with the treating team. This preview does not claim a verified NICU level for Green City; confirm its current capabilities directly.

Questions you may have

Does every hospital provide the same neonatal services?

No. Ask about the specific support, staffing and transfer arrangements relevant to your baby’s needs.
