The IVF process: a step-by-step patient overview

Planning and ovarian monitoring

The team explains the proposed protocol, medicines, monitoring and consent. Ask how appointments fit into your daily life and which symptoms require contacting the clinic. The schedule is individual; do not use a general article as medication instructions.

Egg collection and laboratory work

Eggs are collected and fertilisation is attempted in the laboratory. Depending on the indication, the team may discuss conventional IVF or ICSI. Ask how laboratory updates are provided and what decisions may follow.

Embryo transfer or freezing

The clinician discusses whether and when transfer is appropriate and whether freezing is advised. Not every started cycle reaches transfer, and a treatment plan should explain possible changes.

Testing and follow-up

Follow the clinic’s specified testing date and instructions. Ask how results are communicated, what happens next and what support is available if treatment is unsuccessful.

Questions you may have

Does every IVF cycle follow the same calendar?

No. Protocol, response, laboratory findings and transfer decisions can change the timing.
