When to see a fertility specialist: a practical timeline

Common starting points

ASRM guidance describes evaluation after 12 months of trying when the woman is under 35, or after six months from age 35. Above 40, a more immediate discussion may be appropriate. These are starting points for a clinical conversation, not a reason to ignore known concerns.

Reasons not to wait

Irregular or absent cycles, known reproductive conditions, previous relevant treatment or a suspected sperm-related problem can change the timing. Speak with a clinician about your circumstances instead of applying a calendar rule in isolation.

What to prepare

Make a concise record of the time trying to conceive, cycle patterns, previous pregnancies and tests. Where relevant, both partners’ information belongs in the assessment.

What the first discussion should achieve

Ask which questions need answering before choosing treatment. The aim is a proportionate evaluation and an agreed next step, not an automatic commitment to IVF.

Questions you may have

Does booking an evaluation mean I must start IVF?

No. Evaluation helps discuss the cause, options and whether treatment is needed.
