Make the assessment a shared process
Difficulty conceiving should not be assumed to be caused by one partner. A consultation can review medical history, medicines, previous surgery and relevant symptoms alongside the other partner’s assessment.
Understand the purpose of semen analysis
Semen testing can help assess sperm-related factors. Ask the laboratory for its collection instructions and the expected reporting time. A result needs interpretation in context; do not select treatment from a single number or an internet comparison.
Treatment depends on the findings
Some people need further specialist assessment. ICSI, which involves injecting a sperm into an egg during IVF, may be considered for particular sperm-related problems or previous fertilisation difficulties. It is not an automatic response to every concern.
Prepare your questions
Bring previous reports and a medicine list, and ask whether a urology or andrology consultation would help.
- Does the result need repeating or further evaluation?
- What is the reason for the proposed treatment?
- What are the alternatives, risks and likely costs?
Questions you may have
Does an abnormal semen result always mean IVF is needed?
No. The appropriate next step depends on the findings and the wider assessment of the people involved.
