Early pregnancy symptoms or PMS: what can tell you?

Symptoms alone cannot confirm pregnancy

Breast tenderness, tiredness and changes in how you feel may occur before a period or in early pregnancy. Comparing a symptom checklist cannot reliably distinguish the two. A pregnancy test and, when needed, a clinical assessment are more useful than interpreting individual sensations.

When to use a home test

Most home tests can be used from the first day a period is missed. Follow the instructions for the specific kit. If the result is negative but your period does not arrive, repeat the test after a few days or discuss the situation with a clinician. Fertility-treatment patients should follow their clinic’s testing date.

When to ask for urgent help

Possible pregnancy with significant one-sided pelvic pain, shoulder-tip pain, bleeding, dizziness or fainting needs prompt assessment. Severe pain or collapse is an emergency. Do not wait for a positive home test if you are seriously unwell.

Prepare for a consultation

Note the first day of your last period, whether your cycles are usually regular, test dates and current medicines. This helps the doctor understand the sequence without assuming the cause from symptoms alone.

Questions you may have

Can PMS symptoms prove that I am not pregnant?

No. Symptoms overlap. Use a pregnancy test at an appropriate time rather than relying on a symptom pattern.
