Menstrual irregularities: tracking changes and seeking help

Your normal pattern matters

Cycle timing can vary, but a change from your usual pattern is useful to discuss. Record the start dates, duration and any associated symptoms without trying to diagnose the reason yourself.

Consider the wider history

A clinician may ask about possible pregnancy, contraception, medicines and other health factors. The purpose is to understand the change rather than attribute every irregular cycle to one condition.

Prepare a manageable record

A simple diary is enough. Include symptoms that affect daily life, treatments already tried and questions you want answered. Bring previous reports if you have them; the team can advise whether anything further is needed.

Know the follow-up plan

Ask how results will be communicated and when another visit is recommended. If bleeding is severe or you are faint, very weak or seriously unwell, seek urgent care rather than waiting for a routine appointment.

Questions you may have

Does an irregular cycle always mean infertility?

No. A clinician needs to assess the cause and your circumstances; cycle changes alone do not determine your fertility.
