Risk assessment is not a diagnosis from a checklist
A pregnancy may need additional care because of medical history, previous pregnancy complications, current findings or factors affecting the baby. Some concerns are detected through checks rather than symptoms.
Keep appointments and records connected
Ask what the additional monitoring is intended to assess, who coordinates the plan and when results will be discussed. Keep your records and contact details accessible, particularly if different services are involved.
Report concerns between visits
Do not assume you must wait for the next scheduled appointment. Contact your maternity team about new concerning symptoms. Severe symptoms or a life-threatening emergency require immediate care nearby.
Make a practical support plan
Discuss travel, a support person and any work or home arrangements that may affect attending appointments. Ask for explanations in a language you understand and write down the agreed next step.
Questions you may have
Can I tell whether a pregnancy is high risk from symptoms alone?
No. Clinical history, examination and appropriate investigations are needed; some relevant findings cause no obvious symptoms.
