Pregnancy warning signs: when not to wait
Severe or rapidly worsening symptoms need immediate assessment at the nearest appropriate emergency service. Do not wait for an online appointment or WhatsApp reply.

Contact the maternity team about movement changes

If your baby moves less than usual, stops moving or the usual pattern changes, contact your maternity team immediately. Do not wait until the next day or use food, cold drinks or a home heartbeat monitor to decide that assessment is unnecessary.

Seek help for serious symptoms

Heavy bleeding, severe pain, collapse, chest pain, severe breathing difficulty or another serious concern needs urgent medical attention. Go to appropriate emergency care nearby if the situation is life-threatening rather than waiting for an online response.

Keep your urgent-care plan accessible

Save the maternity contact, know the intended emergency destination and keep pregnancy records available. Tell a support person where to find them. Do not delay care while collecting documents.

Ask what to do after an assessment

Even after a reassuring assessment, contact the team again if symptoms recur or you remain concerned. A previous check does not rule out a new problem.

Questions you may have

Should I try a cold drink before reporting reduced movements?

Do not delay contacting the maternity team while trying to provoke movement or check a heartbeat at home.
