Laparoscopy for infertility: questions before a procedure

Understand why it is proposed

Laparoscopy uses a camera and small incisions to examine or treat conditions inside the abdomen or pelvis. It is a surgical procedure, not a routine requirement for every fertility concern.

Discuss the decision before consenting

Ask what the surgeon expects to learn or treat, whether another investigation could answer the question, and how the result would change your care. A discussion should include the possibility that surgery may not resolve the reason for difficulty conceiving.

Follow the hospital’s preparation instructions

The team should provide procedure-specific instructions about food, medicines and recovery arrangements. Do not use a general article as a fasting or medication plan. Ask who will take you home and when you should seek help after discharge.

Keep the fertility plan connected

Request a copy of the findings and an explanation of what they mean for the next stage. Ask when follow-up is appropriate and which symptoms require an earlier call.

Questions you may have

Is laparoscopy always needed before IVF?

No. Ask your specialist to explain the specific indication and how the findings would affect your plan.
